CHICAGO – The Chicago Teachers Union was pretty proud of itself when it created a video called “Chicago Teachers Union vs. Astroturf Billionaires.” The video claims the defenders of Chicago Public Schools – Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Stand for Children and Democrats for Education Reform – took a page out of the EAG playbook when dealing with the union.
As if that would be a bad thing.

But it seems the public is not interested in the union’s theories about non-existent ties between EAG and Chicago city officials. Judging by the preferences of viewers on YouTube, they are more interested in learning more about CTU President Karen Lewis and her buffoonery.
CTU’s video about EAG, as of this moment, has attracted just over 19,000 views on YouTube. By contrast, a video EAG released last year, showing Lewis mocking U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan’s lisp, talking about going to jail and laughing about her drug use in college, received over 19,000 views on Monday alone. The total number of hits is over 75,000 and climbing fast.
Ultimately, we predict that Mayor Emanuel will cave into union demands in the current strike. The union will score a big – albeit totally unwarranted and unearned – raise for its members, and the city will agree to a teacher evaluation process that, if it even survives in court, will be totally meaningless.
Here’s why. The labor problems plaguing Chicago’s schools are a distraction from President Obama’s re-election campaign and the key role Emanuel plays in that effort. We’re sure the White House is telling the mayor to “give the union what it wants so we can get to the work that really matters.” And we believe, in the end, that’s exactly what he will do.

So ultimately, taxpayers will be left holding the bag and kids will continue to be trapped in failing schools. EAG has accomplished its mission in this mess: showing the public who these union leaders are and how radical their tactics can be. But Emanuel and his allies are clearly not taking anything from our playbook, because they’ve already accepted far too many union demands.
