WASHINGTON, D.C. – Just how desperate – and arrogant – is the National Education Association? The union is resorting to cheap, silly stunts to attack Mitt Romney. Stephanie Cutter, call your office!

In response to Romney’s “I love teachers” remark during the final presidential debate, the NEA has created and posted online a “fake valentine” to attack him.

“When Romney was governor… students and educators struggled under his leadership,” a random community college professor is quoted as saying on the valentine.

It also quotes Romney as saying, “The effort to reduce classroom size may actually hurt education more than it helps.” Actually, what it hurts is NEA revenue because fewer teachers means fewer dues dollars for the union. It’s obvious why the NEA wants smaller class sizes and more teachers. It’s all about the bottom line.

NEA president Dennis Van Roekel told the Huffington Post, “Mitt Romney’s form of love reminds me of being on the schoolyard as a kid. The only way you knew whether or not someone liked you was if they pulled your hair or made fun of you in front of their friends.”

Actually, Romney was referring to his fondness for teachers, not teachers unions. There’s a very big difference between the two. The GOP presidential nominee never claimed to love Van Roekel or his filthy organization.

The bottom line is that the NEA and other teachers unions are starting to sweat. They’ve been watching their grip on the government education system and their political clout melt away in recent years, and that process would surely be accelerated if Romney beats Barack Obama in what is expected to be an extremely close presidential election.

So union officials will say or do anything to attack Romney, even if the make themselves look silly in the process.
