PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia Federation of Teachers claims to be against bullying in schools, but union leaders seem strangely unconcerned that one of their members is being accused of bullying a student.

A quick recap: 16-year-old Samantha Pawlucy claims that her geometry teacher, Lynette Gaymon, harassed and humiliated her for wearing a Mitt Romney t-shirt to class late last month. Gaymon allegedly compared the Romney shirt to a KKK shirt, and warned Pawlucy that she was in a “Democratic school.”

The teacher’s alleged behavior embarrassed Pawlucy. Worse, some of Pawlucy’s fellow students have turned on her, even to the point of threatening her with violence, reports Philly.com.

None of that seems to trouble PFT leaders, who represent all Philadelphia public school teachers, including Gaymon. It seems that enforcing a left-wing political worldview is so important to union officials that it even trumps their concerns about school bullying.

Columnist Jennifer Stefano contacted PFT headquarters and was told that no one has any plans to launch a formal investigation of Gaymon’s behavior. Likewise, nobody at the American Federation of Teachers – PFT’s parent union – has any plans to investigate the matter, or even speak up on behalf of the bullied 16-year-old student.

“Representatives from both unions were flummoxed when asked … how the (Pawlucy family) could have disciplinary action taken against the teacher,” writes Stefano.

“Well, if I were a parent I guess I would write a letter to the school district,” AFT rep Tom Lanford said.

The unions’ lack of concern about Pawlucy’s welfare is revealing, writes Stefano.

“The organizations that will mobilize thousands of its people to demand increases to their already generous and taxpayer funded salaries and benefits packages and move with marksman like precision and speed when filing grievances on behalf of their members are surprisingly immobile and incapable of helping a student who was bullied and harassed by one of their own,” Stefano notes.

According to the AFT, students can’t file a grievance against the teacher because they do not have a collective bargaining contract that allows for such a move.

“It looks like someone needs to organize the students to protect them from the government sector union members,” writes Stefano. “Teenaged Norma Rae, anyone?”
