POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – If children keep getting fatter, First Lady Michelle Obama and the know-it-all Washington, DC bureaucrats will have themselves to thank.

The federal overhaul of the National School Lunch Program – as led by the First Lady – has created numerous problems for the nation’s public schools. The Government Accountability Office recently published a report detailing them.

One of the biggest problems created is a drop in schools’ food sales. Turns out the kids don’t want to eat black bean burgers and kale salads.

As a result, school district food service departments are experiencing operating losses. To compensate, they’re pushing sales of “snacks” to make up for the lost revenue.

LoHud.com reports that numerous New York school districts are peddling high-calorie treats to keep the cash coming in.

In Hudson Valley schools, the carrot sticks “cry out” for takers while students line up for “frosted zebra cakes, fried dough sticks and many more sugar- and fat-laden treats,” the paper reports.

“Why does Highland Middle School offer such junk food?” LoHud.com asks.

“Purely for money,” said Maria McCarthy, food service director for the district.

The district “sold $52,000 in vending machine items and $189,000 in so-called a la carte foods and snacks in 2011-12, among them a high school favorite, nachos with cheese,” the news site adds.

Other New York school districts are following suit.

Arlington schools raised $2 million off selling junk foods. Millbrook made $73,000. Poughkeepsie schools raked in $224,000, while Hyde Park got $130,000 off vending machines alone, according to the Poughkeepsie Journal.

The Dover district made $90,000 off the sale of the drink Yoo-hoo, Gatorade, ice cream and cookies.

“It’s sad we have to do this,” Walter Robinson, lunch manager for Millbrook schools, told Lo Hud.com.

Robinson’s district sells foods he admits are not good for children – pre-fried mozzarella sticks, nachos with cheese, ice cream sundaes and chocolate chip cookies. But it’s the only way for the district to make ends meet, the news site reports.

Whoops! Guess Mrs. Obama and the D.C. bureaucrats didn’t anticipate this when they started meddling with the school lunch menus.

If they don’t back down on their school lunch overhaul, they may end up making U.S. students even more unhealthy than they already are.
