NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – The students of New Britain schools have been warned:

If they show disrespect to teachers or other staff, they should be prepared to face a hefty punishment.

Superintendent Kelt L. Cooper announced a new policy Monday that calls for students to be suspended from school for 5-10 days for showing disrespect towards those in authority, reports the New Britain Herald.

Students are subject to suspension if they curse, use other forms of abusive language, wear overly baggy pants, or show disrespect in any other way.

Cooper is calling this plan, “Don’t talk smack and don’t show crack.”

“We need to deal with the chronic absenteeism and kids in your face,” Cooper said during the school district’s convocation. “I seem to think that at some point along the line people gave up here. But enough is enough.”

There is not an official list of words or actions which will result in suspensions. Principals in each school will be allowed to use their discretion when determining whether to suspend a student and for how long.

“The aggressive in-your-face words like F-you and the B-word, none of that will be tolerated,” Cooper said.

New Britain teachers are in full support of the new policy. More than 100 teachers and staff held up bars of soap as they took a picture with Cooper outside of the school Monday.

Many of the teachers testified that disrespectful students disrupt learning and make their colleagues feel belittled.

Sue Truglio, the local teachers’ union president, said in the story: “Children should be accountable for their actions, both academically and socially. Teachers should not accept anything other than respect.”
