MUSKEGON, Mich. – Sexually related charges against school employees are quickly sweeping across the nation, from sea to shining sea.

We begin in New York, where a female special education teacher confessed to having sex with a 15-year-old student.

Evelyn Rogers, 34, a former high school teacher from Brooklyn, recently admitted to engaging in sexual activities with a male student on at least four separate occasions, reports the New York Daily News.

When sentenced, Rogers will receive 10-years’ probation, have to register as a sex offender and will have her teaching license revoked, the Daily News reports.

The encounters between the teacher and student reportedly took place in Roger’s car throughout August and September of 2012.

After originally offering a plea deal which included a three-year prison sentence, prosecutors strongly objected to the lenient sentence given by the judge, the news report says.

The West Coast

On the opposite coast, a Los Angeles area teacher was arrested last week on suspicion of sexual misconduct with at least two male students.

Melissa Lindgren, 28, a teacher at Nicolas Junior High School, was charged with multiple felonies, including child molestation, child annoyance and “dissemination of harmful matter to a minor,” reports the Los Angeles Times.

Lindgren allegedly sent nude photos of herself to at least one student and engaged in sexual conduct with two students.

The alleged encounters reportedly occurred in a school classroom.

The teacher reportedly admitted to felony sexual misconduct after two “brave” students came forward with the information, the school district said in a statement.

One former junior high student was not surprised by the allegations.

“She used to be a little flirty sometimes with the other male students,” Geovanny Romero told KTLA. “She would kind of joke about going on dates with some students.”

Lindgren was placed on administrative leave and is expected to be arraigned in April.

Up North

david richardsonIn Ohio, a high school science teacher has resigned amidst an investigation of alleged acts of sexual harassment.

David Richardson, 50, a teacher at Elyria City Schools, was set to be terminated by the school board for a violation of district policies before his resignation, according to the Morning Journal.

Although no criminal charges have been filed, the former teacher faces a number of serious sexual allegations.

When asked about the allegations, Gary Taylor, the district’s director of Human Resources, told the Morning Journal, “It was verbal and touching. It was basically a violation of our district policies on sexual harassment and student-teacher communication.”

“He liked to tell this student he loved her, and he wished to hear that from her as well,” Taylor continued. “This is the third incident, and he had been warned. I’m afraid he left us no choice.

The Morning Journal uncovered Richardson’s personal file at the school and discovered previous allegations.

For instance, the former teacher received a two-day suspension for allegedly touching two separate female students on the head and shoulders and peered down their shirts from behind.

In 2003, Richardson received counseling for allegedly tickling a girl, sending inappropriate holiday gifts, and writing notes to female students in which he told them he “loved them.”  One of the gifts reportedly given to a student-aid was a type of body lotion.

The information has been reported to the Ohio Department of Education, which presumably has the power to revoke Richardson’s teaching certificate.

Down South

NIkki sA former Houston area teacher was sentenced to 10 years of probation and a fine of $5,000 for having an inappropriate relationship with a student.

Nikki Scherwitz pleaded guilty last week for having sex with a 16-year-old student and was able to avoid prison time, reports KHOU.

Scherwitz resigned from her job last year, after she showed up at a students’ after-prom party and the relationship was exposed.

Prosecutors said they accepted the plea deal because the student was nearly 17 and Scherwitz agreed to apologize, KHOU reports.

Some students at the school are not pleased with the lenient sentence she received.

“The men get 25 to life, but a woman gets a slap on the wrist with only a $5,000 fine,” student Mario Salinas told KHOU.

“If it was a guy, a male teacher with a female student, it wouldn’t be the same,” agreed another student.

Scherwitz was ordered to stay away from minors and will not be allowed to teach again.
