NEWARK, Ohio – A middle school band director was arrested last week on allegations that he engaged in sexual activities with his students.

Anthony Miller, 32, was taken into custody at Carson Elementary School and is facing sexual-battery charges, reports The Columbus Dispatch.

Meanwhile, educators from New Jersey, Wyoming and North Dakota are facing similar legal difficulties after being accused of having sex with students.

Miller served as the band director at Heritage Middle school, the assistant band director at Newark High School and as an elementary music teacher throughout Newark City Schools.

Prosecutors say Miller had sex with a current high-school student, a former student and “potentially others,” the Dispatch reports. Both reported victims are female and one victim is a minor.

It turns out that the “potentially other” victims were eager to step forward once Miller was arrested. After news broke, the police department reportedly began receiving calls by the hour.

These informants claim that the teacher contacted them via social media and would “initiate conversations that were of a sexual nature.”

Miller’s personnel file shows that in 2012, the district warned him about violating its Internet policy. In that same year, a concerned parent filed a police report, accusing Miller of contacting a girl for months on end, according to the Dispatch.

He was suspended for three days without pay for that incident.

The criminal report filed last week said Miller confessed to police about having sex with at least one of his students while she was enrolled in school and several others after they graduated. He also admitted to exchanging nude photos with a number of female students.

The married father is currently being held in county jail. He has been suspended by the district and is expected to be in court this week.

New Jersey teacher indicted

An English teacher at Parsippany Hills High School in New Jersey has been indicted on charges that she had a sexual relationship with a student half her age.

Jenna Leahey, 32, was indicted last week on two counts of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, one count of second-degree sexual assault, one count of second-degree official misconduct and three counts of fourth-degree criminal sexual contact, reports the Daily Record.

Leahey, a six-year tenured veteran of the district, reportedly admitted to sending sexually charged text messages and pictures of herself to a 16-year-old male student.

The alleged relationship occurred between January and June of 2013, according to police. The victim eventually confessed everything to another staff member, police said.

Leahey is free on bail but cannot have contact with children under the age of 18 and cannot return to work while on bail.

Wyoming teacher pleads guilty

A former Casper, Wyoming junior high teacher pleaded guilty last week to two felony counts of sexual abuse of a minor in the third degree.

Tyler Russell, 24, entered into a plea agreement with the district attorney’s office, admitting that he engaged in a sexual relationship with a female around the age of 14, reports Trib.com.

According to court documents, the victim’s mother discovered graphic Facebook messages and nude photos that were exchanged between the teacher and minor. This information led her to believe that the two were engaging in a sexual relationship and she contacted authorities.

Russell reportedly admitted that he and the girl had sexual relations on one occasion and that she performed oral sex on him another time, according to Trib.com.

He resigned from his teaching position last December and is currently free on bail until sentencing.

Accused North Dakota teacher resigns

A North Dakota middle school teacher – who is accused of having sex with a 15-year-old male student on three separate occasions – has resigned from her teaching position.

Susan Duursma, 35, was a physical education teacher with the Bismarck School district, according to the Minor Daily News.

Duursma was charged last September with three felony counts of corrupting or soliciting a minor. She has been suspended without pay since November, the Daily News reports.

She maintains her innocence.

Duursma is scheduled to appear for trial in May.
