JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Of course school administrators must be fair to everyone involved when a teacher is accused of wrongdoing.

But the safety of students must be the first consideration, and we’re not sure that’s the case at Jacksonville’s Bitmore Elementary.

A female student at the elementary claims her male teacher has followed her into the restroom several times, touched her in an inappropriate manner, and put his hands around her neck and told her to ‘be good,’” according to a report from WJXT.com.

The teacher is being investigated by Jacksonville police and the Florida Department of Children and Families, the news report said.

But get this – “the teacher will not be removed from the classroom, although the school is willing to move the girl to another class.”

There’s no doubt the girl’s parents will take advantage of that offer. In fact they may enroll her in another district altogether, according to the news report.

But what if this teacher has been doing the same type of thing to other children in the class? And what if he’s just crazy enough to keep doing it, despite the scrutiny he’s suddenly experiencing?

With the sort of sickening and unbelievable sex abuse stories coming from schools throughout the nation these days, nothing would surprise us.

The point is that the school has a responsibility to keep that teacher away from students until the accusations are fully investigated.

Anything less is taking an unreasonable gamble with the safety of small children.

Isn’t that much obvious? Isn’t anyone in the Jacksonville school district thinking clearly about this most troubling issue?
