HARDIN, Ill. – Summer vacation has come early this year for a Illinois special education teacher who was recently arrested for making a terrorist threat against her school.
Federal and state authorities allege that 13-year teacher Michelle Lynn Smith typed the letter that read, in part, “KABOOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’m tired of all the people here. Everyone is going down, the school will b n [sic] flames.”
The letter continued: “ … (T)his place sucks and will not be here for long. So long and GOOD-BYE!!!!!!!!!”

After the letter was found in a women’s restroom at the school, “authorities called for an evacuation and swept the building but found no explosives,” LATimes.com reports.
“The letter – filled with misspellings, abbreviations and grammatical mistakes – suggested that its writer was fed up with colleagues, who were described as doing nothing to help others and showing favoritism among their ranks. The high school has 171 students, according to state data, and about 20 faculty members listed on its website,” reports LATimes.com.
Police aren’t saying why they believe Smith is the letter’s author. Smith was arrested last Tuesday “and charged in state court on a count of falsely making a terrorist threat,” the news site adds.
We’re not sure what they mean by “falsely” making a terrorist threat. If she indeed wrote the letter, Smith is guilty of making a very real terrorist threat. Nobody has any way of knowing for certain whether they planned to carry it out.
Smith will appear in court today for a detention hearing. If convicted, she could receive five years in federal prison.
