SOMERVILLE, Mass. – Somerville, a Boston suburb, has been rocked by two sex scandals involving teachers at two different schools.
A 27-year-old male teacher was arrested this past April for taking video of students in the Graham D. Healy school locker room, and a 41-year-old East Somerville Community School female teacher was arraigned the first week of July on two counts of aggravated rape of a child and three counts of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14.
The Boston Herald reports Alexandra Romanos, a fifth-grade ESCS teacher, is being held on $50,000 bail. Romanos entered a not-guilty plea for all charges against her. Josh Wairi was arrested on child pornography charges in April.
Middlesex District Attorney Marian T. Ryan told The Herald that the mother of Romanos’ alleged teen victim discovered “inappropriate exchanges while checking her child’s online activity. Ryan said investigators later determined that Romanos, who has taught at the school for seven years, initiated a sexual relationship with the teen in March both on and off school grounds.”
Ryan acknowledged that investigators were exploring the possibility that Romanos might have molested other students.
Romanos’ pretrial is set for July 29.
The charges against Romanos came three months after Wairi confessed to taking videos of children in various stages of undress in the Graham D. Healy school locker room.
The website Wicked Local Cambridge reports Wairi “was charged with transportation of child pornography and three counts of production of child pornography. He is currently being held without bail. The criminal complaint alleges, among other things, that Wairi, a fifth-grade teacher, used his email account to trade and receive images of child pornography and also uploaded images and videos of children being sexually exploited.
The complaint further alleges that Wairi transferred the images and videos of child pornography to other users. If convicted, Wairi faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years and a maximum of 30 years in prison on each count of production of child pornography and a mandatory minimum of five years and maximum of 20 years in prison on the count of transportation of pornography.
