FORT THOMAS, Ky. – Another school district has defied Michelle Obama’s “food police” and leaders are telling the feds they can keep their money.

School leaders in the Fort Thomas Independent School District have decided to opt out of the National School Lunch Program and have elected to forgo the estimated $260,000 in federal funds that come along with participation. But in exchange, they’re able to maintain local control over their school lunch menu.

“We feel like, based on the way it’s going, we can do a better job locally than the federal government can in regards to what our kids in Fort Thomas want,” superintendent Gene Kirchner told WLWT.

“When kids head back to school at Highlands High School, they’re going to see more of their favorites on the school lunch menu, and bigger portions, too. That’s because the district has decided to opt out of the federal school lunch program,” the news station reports.

“We watch children every day walk past the cash register and then throw away things that we are forced, have forced them to take essentially, as a result of the federal requirements for lunches,” Kirchner told WLWT.

The district hopes an increase in lunch sales and ala carte items will offset the loss of the federal funds.

Fort Thomas is the latest in a long line of districts that have recently ditched the federal regulations and money.

Wisconsin’s Glendale district also recently opted out, calling the rules a “financial disaster” for their school budget.

“Vicky Hanson, the district’s food service director, said foods like black beans, kale and whole grains just end up in the trash at the end of the lunch hour,” Glendalenow.com reported.

Another Wisconsin district, Muskego-Norway, opted out and school board president Rick Petfalski didn’t mince words as to why.

“By leaving the program we will not be required to follow these onerous guidelines, pushed by and large by Michelle Obama, who last I checked has been elected by no one,” Petfalski said, EAGnews reported at the time.
