CLIFFSIDE PARK, N.J. – The Ivy League and NCAA have both suspended a school counselor facing serious assault charges, but not the Cliffside Park school district.
Edward C. Meier was in the Bergen County Jail on “$250,000 bail on charges of sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office said,” according to The Record.

The school employee – a former “Teacher of the Year” – is accused of sexually assaulting a 5-year-old girl.
Despite the serious accusations – and still being housed in the county jail, Meier was still listed on the school roster.
“The investigation really has nothing to do with the school district,” superintendent Michael Romagnino says.
In another story, The Record reports New Jersey state laws forbids a school district from suspending an employee “who is currently incarcerated.”
Should that person be released, the district then can suspend the employee with pay – or without pay if the person is indicted, Romagnino said, according to the paper.
“What’s going to happen if he’s released?” Romagnino asks. “A decision will be made at that time, and we will follow all the correct procedures and laws.”

As to the accusations, the paper reports:
The arrest occurred after the mother of the 5-year-old told authorities that a relative informed her of inappropriate behavior between Meier and the victim, the Prosecutor’s Office said. Police then interviewed the child, who provided details about the alleged sexual activity, authorities said.
But Meier, a basketball referee, has been suspended by the NCAA.
“Edward Meier has been suspended from all conference-related activities pending further information,” said Doug DeBiase, the Division II Central Athletic Collegiate Conference assistant commissioner for communications, says.
“We are troubled and saddened by the news reports of Ed Meier’s arrest. We take the allegation seriously and have suspended Dr. Meier from all activities associated with the Ivy League pending additional details and information,” a statement from the Ivy League reads.
In addition to being his school’s teacher of the year in 1989, Meier received the Bergen County Professional Counselors Association Human Rights Award in 2003 and Guidance Counselor of the Year Award from the Bergen County School Counselors Association in 2011, according to a district newsletter that year, The Record reports.
