LEROY, N.Y. – A student at Notre Dame High School went to school one day with hair and came home with is head shaved.

The boy’s mother, who says her son “was bullied into being humiliated in front of his classmates,” told ABC13 that the assistant principal at Notre Dame High in Batavia buzzed off her son’s hair in the middle of the cafeteria.

According to the news source, 17-year-old Lucas Hull had just gotten a haircut the day before. It was trimmed short on the sides with a little length on top – a “faux-hawk.”

Because a mohawk haircut violates the school’s dress code policy, Hull asked permission from the school before getting the cut.

According to Hull, the assistant principal said he would have to see it first before deciding if the faux-hawk violates school policy.

Hull told the news source that during his first day at school with his new cut, an announcement came over the loud speaker calling him to the cafeteria. Hull said the assistant principal didn’t like his hair and told the boy, “You have the choice to either go home or get it cut.” The boy said he didn’t feel like he had much of a choice.

According to Hull, the assistant principal went to his office to retrieve clippers and then proceeded to shave his head in front of most of the senior class.

ABC13 reports that Hull was emotional when he spoke to them about the incident. “Just having people watch and have that done to you,” he said, “it kind of felt humiliating and inhumane and you know, it kind of crushed my spirits for the day.”

Hull’s sister said she cried when she saw him in the hallway. “When he got that haircut, his face… it was hard to see and not break down in class.”

More than a month has passed since the incident, but Hull’s family tells ABC13 that he still hasn’t regained his confidence.

According to the family, all they’ve received from the school is a “halfhearted apology,” which they say, “was not enough.”

ABC13 reports Denise Hull believes the assistant principal went out of his way to embarrass her son. “What really upset me even more than the haircut is how much his feelings were hurt for what had happened,” she said. “I mean here is a good kid.”

Following the initial news story, Notre Dame High School released a statement claiming that the assistant principal apologized to Hull, his parents, and the school community for his error in judgment in cutting the student’s hair.

According to WIVB.com, the school statement also said that Hull’s “mohawk haircut” violated the school’s dress code.

There was no mention in the statement as to why the assistant principal keeps clippers in his office. However, it did say that the school’s dress code policy has been amended so that parents will be consulted prior to any similar action in the future.

Hull’s mother argued that no one at the school had the right to touch her son that day without at least a phone call.
