, N.J. – A teacher has resigned after police say he “was seen masturbating while watching children at a bus stop.”

John Watson, Morris Catholic High School music teacher, was charged with lewdness after police were called “about a man masturbating in the back seat of a vehicle at a bank on Route 53,” the Daily Record reports.

A witness’s identification of his license plate led police to the teacher and it was “learned he had done this at least three additional times but Nigro would not say how police came to that conclusion,” according to the paper.

He was charged with four counts and posted bail, police say.

The name of the bank and the bus stop location were not released “for the safety of the children at the bus stop.”

Rich Sokerka, a spokesperson for the Diocese of Paterson, says Watson was a part-time music teacher at Morris Catholic, and he resigned the day of his arrest.

“His criminal background check and fingerprint check, given prior to his start of employment in September, had come back clean,” Sokerka tells the newspaper.

“He had also completed ‘Protecting God’s Children,’ the Paterson Diocese’s prevention program on child sexual abuse. He also signed the diocesan Code of Conduct for employees, pledging to abide by it.”

Parsippany Patch notes Watson is also a private music instructor.

“A website for John Watson Productions was taken down Wednesday, but a thumbtack.com profile of the teacher says Watson is a certified K-12 music teacher and provides private coaching in piano, voice, music, theory, trumpet, and guitar,” Patch reports.

Watson has also reportedly taught in the past at the Peck School in Morristown, as well as Matawan-Aberdeen Regional High School.

Watson’s personal website notes the teacher also recently opened a magic business, “Magic by JW.”
