KISSIMMEE, Fla. – A teacher has been “reassigned” away from the classroom after she brought a toy musket to school for a lesson the Revolutionary War.

Neptune Middle School 8th grade teacher Gema Evans allegedly brought a “fake rifle” as a prop for the lesson.

WKMG reports several students “came forward with concerns.”

“Osceola County School District said several complained that they were frightened by the replica,” according to the news station.

Many parents seemed to agree that the teacher’s use of the fake guy was out of line.

“If it was one of those, like a squirt gun looking thing, then by all means, that’s fine,” parent Lauren Beck says.

“Personally, whenever I was a kid, that would’ve been acceptable. Why is it that nowadays that everything is just so taboo?”

“I think she took it too far in today’s times. Any other time, I would say ‘no,'” another parent, Donna Smith, tells Local 6.

“I think that’s negative. That’s not probably supposed to be. I think it’s not proper, it’s improper to have guns in school,” parent Armando Vega tells Channel 9.

A school district representative tells WFTV that it was reported that “the social studies teacher had the rifle in the classroom, but it wasn’t capable of firing.”

The school is investigating the teacher’s lesson and says the rifle may be exempt from the school zero-tolerance weapons policy.

Someone apparently also contacted the sheriff’s department but the department did not indicate if they would investigate.

The school has banned Evans from having contact with students until the matter is resolved.
