MASVINGO, Zimbabwe – Parents of students in Zimbabwe province of Masvingo are proposing a seemingly effective solution for dealing with educators who sexually abuse students: castration.

“We are now shattered of habitual rapist teachers who are sexually abusing our unsuspecting and innocent children,” Enock Chiumburu, parent and village head, told ZimEye.com. “We want them castrated and also locked for a long time in custody, to implant distress in their colleagues, who might want to do the same.”

One villager, a relative of a student sexually abused by a teacher, told the news site she would prefer if convicted child rapist teachers were castrated, then sentenced to death.

Rudo Chatira said “we have organized ourselves as parents from three districts of Masvingo – Zaka, Gutu and Bikita – to lobby for the castration of all perpetrators of rape at our schools.”

The calls for castration come amid several recent cases of teachers sexually abusing students in the region. Makwau Secondary School teacher Tawanda Zinyemba allegedly raped a 14-year-old female student last year after goading the girl into falling in love with him, according to the news site.

“Zinyemba would ask the victim to take some pupils’ exercise books to his house for marking and tell her to wait for him in the house. He proposed love to her but she initially refused,” ZimEye.com reports. “As a way to persuade the pupil, Zinyemba started to give her money so that she would comply. The teacher allegedly continued giving her money until she consented to having sexual intercourse with him.”

The victim eventually disclosed the inappropriate relationship to local officials who grew suspicious of her behavior.

In another case, Gutu teacher Simon Gwatiringa is charged with raping a 15-year-old student after attempting to buy her silence with food and a school uniform. That case is pending court proceedings in Gutu.

Last month, a teacher in Bulawayo was sentenced to 21 years in prison for sodimising six teen boys during school breaks and lunch times, ZimEye.com reports.

The reaction to rapist teachers in Zimbabwe is relatively mild compared to how some residents in India handle similar situations, according to the Daily Mail.

Last October, locals found 40-year-old Suresh Kumar attempting to rape a teenage girl when the child cried for help. Residents in Ganganagar in India’s Rajasthan state reportedly found the girl pinned against the wall by Kumar and took matters into their own hands.

According to the Daily Mail, “a lynch mob dragged him to a butchers shop where they beat him with sticks for an hour before castrating him.”

The angry villages tossed Kumar’s severed man parts in the middle of the road and left his bloody body nearby.

Aamir Dhawan told the Daily Mail nobody went to Kumar’s aid.

“We have had a lot of intolerable offences against women in this country recently, with girls being raped, hung, and molested, and it’s time it stopped,” Dhawan said.

“This sends out a very strong message to anyone like that – if you do it you will be punished.”
