BURLINGAME, Calif. – The California Teachers Association’s board of directors chose not to pursue a recent proposal by union members to offer testing for sexually transmitted diseases.

The proposal, which would “offer free information and testing for sexually transmitted diseases and the prevention thereof,” was made at the California Teachers Association State Council in April and referred to the CTA’s board of directors, according to EIAonline.

The proposal did not offer many specifics regarding how the plan would be implemented.

A follow-up article published by EIAonline states that after deliberating on the idea, the CTA’s board of directors decided not to pursue the proposal “because there are other avenues to achieve the same results.”

The union has pursued other eyebrow-raising ideas in the past.

Last fall, the union passed a resolution in support of mandating ethnic studies for all California students.

The proposal — “CTA support the efforts of all CA school districts and locals in making Ethnic Studies a graduation requirement, so that all students have an opportunity to learn about our cultural diversity and history” — passed, according to Ethnic Studies Now.
