MADISON, Wis. – The end of the school year means many things in Wisconsin. Children and teachers begin their vacations, high school students take up summer jobs, recent graduates prepare for college or tech school in the fall. It also means schools boards around the state will begin constructing their budgets for the fall.

For Madison that means (naturally) a tax increase; around $97 more for a $245,000 home, and increased spending. It also means that for the first time in 20 years, the school board itself will be giving itself pay raise.

A portion of the spending board members are proposing to add to the budget would go toward raising how much School Board members are paid. The current annual stipend is $4,200, and board member Dean Loumos has proposed to raise the payment to $8,000 — a total cost of $26,634, according to the school district.

“It’s just time,” Loumos said. He said a pay increase is needed, in part, to make the job more attractive.

Yes, because if there’s anything Mary Burke needs more of, it’s more money.

For having a laughable concept of what “public service” is, the Madison School Board is our “Loser of the Day.”
