GREENFIELD, Ind. – Just how many K-12 students are sexually abused by teachers every year, just because school administrators look the other way rather than heed obvious warning signs?
In 2010, a 13-year-old middle school student at Doe Creek Middle School in Hancock County, Indiana was allegedly molested by a male gym teacher. The boy had been hit in the groin with a ball during class, and was allegedly taken into a locker room and fondled by the teacher, according to the Indianapolis Star.

The teacher, Bryan Turner, pleaded guilty to a charge of battery and resigned his position, the news report said.
Now the family of the victim has filed a lawsuit against the School Corporation of Southern Hancock County, claiming that school administrators were warned by other staff members about Turner’s allegedly worrisome behavior around young boys, but failed to respond.
That, according to the lawsuit, allowed the assault on the 13-year-old to occur, the newspaper said.
According to the Star, “Court records say (former gym teacher) Carly Brubeck had seen Turner run his fingers through the hair of his male students and place his hands on their waistbands. Brubeck also had heard Turner tell students they had ‘sexy bodies.’ She told school officials of the incidents and showed them a picture of a male student sitting on Turner’s lap, court records say.
“But, according to the lawsuit, school officials did not investigate Brubeck’s complaints and failed to enforce mandatory reporting requirements among students and school employees. The suit says the principal at Doe Creek told Brubeck that he ‘didn’t need a weekly report on all of this stuff” and that she should only talk to him about more serious matters.”
Mario Massillamany, the attorney for the plaintiffs, said his firm has been in contact with a former student who was allegedly molested by Turner three decades ago, the news report said.

“Massillamany also said he believes there are other victims,” the Star said. “His client’s family has been in contact with a couple of other families who have decided to remain silent because of fears of embarrassment and backlash.”
