WASHINGTON, D.C. – While Congressional Republicans mull reauthorizing the National School Lunch Program, students continue to lash out at the program’s champion: First Lady Michelle Obama.

Several students — and even a teacher — recently posted photos to Twitter tagged with #ThanksMichelleObama — a popular hashtag to expose the paltry lunches being served by schools as a result of the 2010 overhaul to the federal program.

One student, Azalee Harris, expressed her frustration in her mashed potatoes after “all butter and salt was taken out.”

Ms. Sokolis, a math teacher in Bel Air, Maryland, ordered a hot lunch after she said she forgot her lunch that day.

The school lunch consisted of “buffalo chicken pizza and nachos.” The Cherry Coke (not diet!) was likely obtained in the teachers’ lounge as most schools have banned sugary drinks to comply with the federal mandates.

Logan Rubner posted his lunch served at Anamosa High School in Iowa. It consisted of a small bowl of what appears to be chili, apple sauce, a pear and a (whole wheat) cinnamon roll.

“Welcome to Anamosa. Where lunches are never filling,” he wrote, adding “#thanksmichelleobama”.

Meanwhile, Bobby Patel, a student in South Carolina, posted a photo of sandwiches that are no bigger than his finger.

Tagging Michelle Obama in the photo, he said, “Try this out for size.”

NBC News reports Senate Republicans are seeking exemptions to the rules. The School Nutrition Association wants more funding to offset rising costs.

The rules expire September 30.

Michelle Obama has vowed to fight “to the bitter end” to protect her program.
