INDIANAPOLIS – The basketball season is over for two girl’s varsity teams in Indiana after a violent brawl broke out during a game over the weekend.

An estimated 60 people spilled onto the court during the fourth-quarter of a girl’s basketball game between Pike and Ben Davis high schools Saturday afternoon in a “bench-clearing brawl” caught on video, WDRB reports.

The visiting Pike High School was leading 57-41 when the fight broke out and forced a double forfeit. On Monday, the Indiana High School Athletic Association suspended both teams for the remainder of the season, including the state tournament next month. They’ll be on probationary status for the 2016-17 season, the Indianapolis Star reports.

Players from both schools will be required to complete an online sportsmanship course, and coaches must complete a modeling behavior course, as well.

“Remorse doesn’t solve our issue,” IHSAA Commissioner Bobby Cox said, according to WISH. “I’m hopeful people are going to understand this is serious.”

“When you have something that is this dangerous, this violent and unacceptable with respect to sportsmanship within our rules, swift and stern discipline has to be issued,” he told the Star. “We take no pleasure in issuing these kinds of penalties, but it’s consistent and strong and determined in how we are going to administer sportsmanship in our state.”

The IHSAA punishment was handed down after the organization’s officials met with principals and athletic directors from both schools in a joint meeting to review video footage from the brawl.

The fight is similar to one between Griffith and Hammond boy’s varsity basketball teams in February in which the IHSAA issued the same season suspension. However, the schools filed a lawsuit and won a temporary restraining order allowing them to play in the state tournament. A judge ruled that because the IHSAA season-ending sanction wasn’t consistent with prior punishments for similar offenses, the Star reports.

Ben Davis spokeswoman Mary Lang told the Star the district would comply with the IHSAA ruling, though Pike’s position is unclear.

“Both Pike and Ben Davis had legitimate aspirations for a tournament run. Pike, the two-time defending sectional champion, was ranked No. 10 in Class 4A and 14-4 entering Saturday’s game,” according to the news site. “Ben Davis, a four-time state champion, was 13-5 and enjoying its best season in four years.”

Game footage showed officials Saturday attempted to control the emotionally charged game with multiple double and technical fouls. Coaches also called time outs on several occasions to calm their players.

Pike senior Tyana Robinson – who signed a Division I scholarship with Florida Atlantic University – told the Star in a follow up story that she avoided the calamity to preserve her future.

“My first reactions was to walk away from the whole thing,” she said. “I went toward our bench. I have a scholarship and knew that could be taken away. I tried to stay clear of the whole situation. I couldn’t believe what happened. It happened so fast it was hard for me to process it all.”

The team’s leading scorer and 3-point shooter said the game was “very physical” from the tip-off.

“Obviously it’s an unfortunate situation,” she told the Star. “I do respect the decision that was made because of the whole incident. For us seniors, to not be able to play in the sectional is tough. For the younger ones, it’s a tough experience but it should be a good learning experience on how to keep your emotions together and work towards having better sportsmanship.”
