SOUTH HOUSTON, Texas – South Houston police are investigating after a student at South Houston High School allegedly dumped her baby’s body in the girl’s bathroom.

ABC 11 reports a janitor found the baby’s body around 9 p.m. last night, and Pasadena Independent School District officials immediately brought in district police, who confirmed the baby was dead.

“The custodian who was on assignment last night at South Houston High School, she discovered the infant’s body in one of the restrooms,” Pasadena ISD spokeswoman Renea Ivy told the media in a press conference in front of the school today.

“Our first concern when we heard about the incident is that we had a student who needed medical attention,” Ivy told The Pasadena Citizen afterwards. “The safety and well-being of our students and staff is a top priority.”

School and police officials reviewed surveillance footage from the school to track down the mother, and they contacted her parents. Ivy said the mother is now receiving medical care.

Officials also called in the Harris County Medical Examiner, who is conducting an autopsy to determine the baby’s cause of death. Ivy told the media officials believe the baby was stillborn.

The girl’s parents had no clue their daughter was pregnant, Ivy said.

“Our concern is that she will be okay,” the spokeswoman told People. “It’s a sad, sad situation.”

Click 2 Houston’s Phil Archer reports officials referred to the baby as a “fetus,” but “were unable to tell us if the fetus had come to full term, or where exactly it was discovered in that room.”

The incident sparked a variety of reactions from readers online.

“Hope she gets charged with murder,” commenter “Really” posted to People. “This is a prime example of why abortion shouldn’t be shunned. This girl should have terminated the pregnancy in the first 9 weeks so NONE of this would have happened.

“She’s obviously so freaking stupid she thought she could get away with it. Unbelievable,” Really continued. “Let’s walk in school, have a baby and leave it … nobody will know. OMG.”

“How can family members not notice a pregnancy belly or odd behavior? It amazes me,” Raine wrote. “This girl was either alone all the time or ignored. I’m sorry, but as a parent, you need to look for changes in your teen emotionally and physically.”

“Very sad the girl did not feel she should tell anyone about the situation,” Raistlin13 posted. “Tragic all around.”
