WFMZ television station noted that the letters “RHS” were also included – the obvious possibility being a reference to nearby Reading High School – though neither school nor police authorities discussed the apparent acronym.

“This is fairly unique for us and an isolated incident,” principal Tony Balistrere said. “It was all graffiti in nature and all external damage, and nothing was broken.”

Balistrere said a school athletic trainer discovered the graffiti Saturday and alerted officials. School workers, as well as student and parent volunteers, spent Saturday afternoon scrubbing and cleaning windows and doors, and repainting some walls, to clean up the mess before classes resumed today, WFMZ reports.

“We will continue working with Reading police to determine who did this,” Balistrere told the Eagle.

Berks Catholic officials told WFMZ they were forced to cancel a basketball game Saturday because of the incident, but school activities resumed the following day.

None of the news reports, school or police officials suggested the incident may have been a hate crime, based on the anti-Christian messages and symbols. Several commenters expressed doubts in Facebook posts that the same restraint would be shown for similar messages directed at Muslims or other groups.

“Is it considered a hate crime? I mean, someone put bacon on the door handles of a mosque and you would think the world was gonna end,” Dave Oliver posted, a reference to the Spring Valley, Nevada mosque targeted with a “hate crime” last week.

“Hate crime against Catholics!” Raymond Maher added.

Others were simply angry anyone would deface property, much less a religious school.

“Only truly sick morons would do this,” Sue Gougler wrote, “hope you get them.”

“I hope they catch the trash and give them prison time. No probation, no community service. Jail,” Rey Rivera posted.

“Think of how much better the world would be if all the negativity and hate would be turned into positivity and good,” Kathy Gajewski Readingger dreamed.
