HOUSTON – A Texas bus driver is without a job after she stopped dangerously close to a moving train with a bus load of Klein Oak High School students last week.
A video of the terrifying ordeal is going viral online as students on the bus speak out about their near-death experience on the way home from school Feb. 10, KPRC reports.

“I was terrified. I thought I was going to die,” student Harold VanAlstyne IV told the news site. “We were all screaming and telling her to move forward. Everyone was just freaking out.”
The sophomore said he was in the back of the bus when he saw the train coming in the distance.
“I got up and I ran to the middle of the front of the bus and I got down and I braced myself, getting ready for the impact because at that moment I was scared for my life,” he said.
Klein Independent School District spokeswoman Judy Rimato told KHOU the female bus driver crossed the train tracks near Northcrest and Root roads around 2:15 p.m. last Wednesday as the railroad sign began to flash, then stopped at a stop sign that left the rear of the bus dangerously close to the train.
In the video, there appears to be less than a foot of clearance.

“I think it’s pretty scary. Like it’s crazy what could happen to people just on their ride home from school,” student Dominick Burns told KPRC. “People need to pay better attention on what they’re doing, where they’re at, and buses are supposed to stop before they hit the track anyway.”
A Klein ISD statement said after the incident, “The bus driver subsequently returned the bus to school reporting that the students were too loud for the bus to be driven safely.
“The bus driver was suspended while the incident was investigated,” it continued. “The investigation revealed that the driver did not follow standard procedures when crossing the railroad track with the train coming in the distance.”
The driver, who has not been identified, was later fired, Fox 8 reports.
Texas law requires school bus drivers to stop no closer than 15 feet, but not farther than 50 feet, from railroad crossings at any sign of a train.
The district contends the driver did stop and open the door, but did not see the train approaching.
The driver’s daughter also defended her mother on Facebook after the fact.
The daughter said her mother is a dedicated driver with 20 years of experience who puts up with bullying from students, who were out of control when the incident occurred. She also alleged the driver resigned with the support of her colleagues, according to KPRC.
Regardless, most parents were outraged over the incident.
“You know what,” said Todd Lux, parent of a Klein Oak freshman, told KHOU. “I think bus drivers need to wake up a little bit and do a little bit better job of making sure they follow the protocol at the railroad tracks.”
“I think it actually sends a message to the other bus drivers to make sure that they’re doing their jobs,” he said.
“It could have been horrible,” Sharon VanAlstyne said. “Just a few more inches and it could’ve been done.”
