TACOMA, Wash. – A Larchmount Elementary kindergarten teacher is appealing her termination after she was allegedly found in her classroom last week with a blood-alcohol content at least five times the legal limit to drive.

bowmanAn investigative report released Tuesday reveals Tacoma kindergarten teacher Klara Bowman was working on a “second-chance” agreement with Tacoma Public Schools for previous alcohol problems when a student reported to the school office last month that “she was in need of help,” King 5 reports.

An assistant principal allegedly found Bowman on a chair in the corner of the classroom with her head leaning back, and said she was “extremely unsteady” on her feet with slurred speech. She was escorted from the classroom and placed on administrative leave Feb. 12.

“Another teacher reported that earlier in the day, Bowman was ‘acting out of it’ and was seen falling onto two students, then propping herself up and laughing during a reading lesson,” according to the news site.

The investigative report shows Bowman registered a blood alcohol content of at least .4, though the actual reading may have been higher but the test only goes up to .4. The legal limit to drive in Washington is .08, which means Bowman’s BAC was at least five times that threshold.

Two district patrol officers searched Bowman’s classroom and allegedly recovered an empty bottle of white rum and an empty bottle of wine in the room, as well as several knives and over-the-counter medications in a low, unlocked drawer in her desk, Fox Q13 reports.

Bowman’s employment file shows a history of concerns about alcohol abuse, starting with a conversation in 2010 and evolving into a last-chance agreement in 2011 after she admitted to being drunk in her classroom.

“A letter of reprimand shows Bowman registered a BAC of .286 after the 2011 incident,” according to the news site.

The recently released investigative report contends Bowman attempted to cover up her misdeeds even after she was allegedly found drunk in class and banned from the building.

In a text to a colleague, Bowman allegedly attempted to convince her co-worker to remove two bottles of alcohol she stashed in her classroom.

“Well, I was caught,” she wrote. “I’m an idiot and will likely not step foot into my classroom any time again in the near future. However, I have two bottles that are still stashed in there and I’m so dreading them finding them. Would you be willing to go in my room tomorrow and get them and put them in the garbage!?!”

The teacher friend instead took screenshots of the message and handed them over to district investigators, which allegedly prompted a second message, Fox Q 13 reports.

“Please don’t say anymore more to anyone with anything (sic),” Bowman wrote, according to the report. “I know you contacted them. Please don’t say anything more. Again, sorry I said anything. Please. I was told it was sores that I tried to contact a staff member and the only person I’ve contacted is you. Please please please don’t repeat this.”

District officials told the news site Bowman did not deny the allegations, apologized for her behavior, and entered a rehabilitation program a week after her termination.

They also said they did not detail the exact reason Bowman was fired in hopes of saving her from public humiliation.

“While it was clear that the behavior of this former teacher warranted termination because of the exceptional conduct,” Tacoma schools spokesman Dan Voelpel said, “what wasn’t war rented, we thought, was a public shaming, so we did not notify parents of the reason behind it for that very reason.”

King 5 reports Bowman appealed her termination.
