FOREST GROVE, Ore. – Hundreds of Forest Grove high school students ditched class to protest a “racist” banner hung inside Forest Grove High School for “literally a minute or two.”

“It was immediately taken down, within literally a minute or two, and the students who hung it have been disciplined,” Forest Grove School District chief of staff Connie Potter told The Oregonian Wednesday.

Potter said the sign, which read “Build a Wall,” was put up earlier that day but was immediately removed by school officials. It also immediately sparked outrage from the school’s Latino students, which make up about half of the student population.

The sign was placed over another student banner, used for “Unity Week,” that read “Spread the word to end the Word,” a reference to a black teacher who was allegedly called the N word earlier this year.

Students posted pictures of the “racist” banner on social media, and soon students in the district’s other high schools joined in condemning the “racism and intolerance.” Today, Forest Grove High School students marched out of class toting Mexican flags and signs with messages including “Migration is beautiful,” “deport racism,” “brown is beautiful,” and others.

In total, hundreds of students from several of the district’s high schools left class and marched down Main Street in Forest Grove chanting “FT stand up! FT stand up!” as they made their way to the district office to demand changes, the Portland Tribune reports.

“This is what unity looks like,” Robert Bliss posted to Twitter with a picture from the student march.

Zeleyma Rubio also posted several pictures and a video.

“Beaverton, Hihi, & Liberty all supporting FG. We will be heard if we all work together!” she wrote.

Ms. Quimby at Merlo Station High School posted pictures of students and staff taking a break from learning time to pose with protest signs. “Merlo Station staff students and admin 2gether for unity and equity! We got ur back FGHS,” she wrote.

“Even the cops are on our side, they said ‘can I have your attention … Look both way before crossing the street’ and honked,” Josh wrote.

“If we skip enough class, we can end racism!!” Tommy posted.

Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici also tweeted her support for students: “Glad to see peaceful action against racism and intolerance.”

Others took the opportunity to direct their rage at presumptive Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

“@realDonaldTrump your hate and racism only make our youth stronger. Step down,” Sydney Foster posted.

Numerous news outlets and students posted videos and pictures throughout the rally, which concluded shortly after 11 a.m., The Oregonian reports.

It’s unclear whether students who participated will face disciplinary action, though the superintendent told KGW they would not if they stayed on campus.

While many people applauded the student walkout online, others were clearly not impressed.

“I’m not a fan of Trumpisms or building a wall, but how do you punish one form of free speech (putting up a dumb banner) but not punish another (walking out of class)?” Ryan Sweeney questioned on Facebook.

“These kids are mindless idiots…they are extremely lucky they live in the USA where they have opportunities that are limitless,” Tony posted in The Oregonian comments.

“Oddly enough the school has a fence around it to keep the riff-raff out,” Ortho Doxy wrote.

“No need for free speech, this is now a Mexican territory,” Cody_Seth_Crawford wrote. “The kids who put up the banner were right. We need the wall.”
