NEW YORK – Students at Coney Island’s Abraham Lincoln High School are sweating their final exams, but it has more to do with the school’s ban on water bottles and lack of air conditioning than test anxiety.

Abraham Lincoln officials banned students from bringing water bottles or other bottled drinks to school until after finals, known as Regents Exams, have concluded next week, NBC New York reports.

Students told the news site the school does not have air conditioning and the ban has been grueling.

“Like, we have no energy,” student Hajar Abbassi said. “We are thirsty.”

Officials said they instituted the ban Friday after learning about a possible senior prank involving baby oil, or a large water fight, or something like that. Officials notified parents and guardians about their decision last week and so far the ban has staved off any shenanigans, they said.

Students, meanwhile, must buy drinks from school vending machines or quench their thirst between classes at hallway water fountains.

School officials confirmed to NBC New York that Abraham Lincoln does not have air conditioning, but contend fans are keeping students cool.

Weather Underground reports temperatures reached 94.6 degrees yesterday on Coney Island, though it’s not forecast to break 80 degrees again until next week.

“This is a lie, they called my mom today and there are barely any fans,” Ro Finnese posted to Facebook.

Several folks who commented on the social media site think students should simply buck up and quit bellyaching.

“Back in the day there was no air conditioning in schools, no water bottles, just drinking fountains that we were not even allowed to get a drink from!” Barbara Bernardi posted. “Kids nowadays are spoiled rotten to say the very least! WE SURVIVED…we didn’t even have air conditioners in our homes!”

“These kids would have never survived when I was in school. Bunch of freaking spoiled brats,” Jodi Rybczynski added.

“It hasn’t even been hot as yet!” Marisol Matias wrote. “If it were over 90 degrees I can understand, but it’s been hotter and I had to work inside a room with no windows in a school and I still survived so kids and their parents need to stop with the drama!”

Very few people expressed concern about the water ban.

“Now that’s really stupid to ban water bottles from schools where there is no AC,” Shannon Baker posted. “When someone collapse and dies then they will rethink the ban. Until then, parents hydrate your kids before they get to those saunas.”
