HAMPTON, Va. – Police are holding a 13-year-old girl in a Virginia detention facility for threatening to kill by electronic message after she allegedly solicited a clown on social media to murder her teacher.

Hampton Police told the Daily Press they received a call around 6:45 p.m. Sunday about treats made on social media, though the site used remains unclear.

Investigation revealed a 13-year-old female student contacted a person on the site who was using a clown alias and profile picture, and asked the person to murder her teacher at Davis Middle School, according to WVEC.

“The request came only a couple of days after social media threats involving clowns caused police to beef up security at schools in Newport News and Hampton. While police did not consider the threats credible, they patrolled the schools as a precaution,” the Daily Press reports.

Police alerted the threatened teacher and tracked down the teen, who was arrested and booked into a “secured detention facility” on one count of threatening to kill by electronic message. Officials contend the only threat was against the teacher.

Numerous Hampton Police vehicles patrolled Davis Middle School on Monday, though police told the Daily Press there’s no reason to believe there’s a serious threat at the school.

School officials also issued a statement to parents on Monday, WTKR reports.

“Last night, a Davis Middle School student was arrested for making a threat on social media against one of our teachers. No one has been harmed, and the student is in a secured detention facility,” the letter read. “At this time, there is no evidence to indicate a threat against others.

“Please know that we have taken measures to ensure the continued safety of our students and staff.”
