VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – A Virginia Beach math teacher resigned after he was arrested and charged with assault for allegedly writing the word “focus” on a student’s forehead.
Students told WTKR Landstown Middle School math teacher Daniel Board, 46, asked students to “hold down” a male classmate September 16 while he wrote the word “focus” on the teen’s forehead. He then allegedly told a female student sitting next to the boy to hit him whenever he said something “stupid,” and the girl complied on at least three occasions, the news site reports.

Court documents show Board was upset because the student wasn’t paying attention in class, and allegedly would not let him wipe off the embarrassing decoration until he completed his work, according to the Associated Press.
Students were talking with their parents about the incident this week.
“My daughter did tell me yesterday, and she had three friends that were actually in the class,” parent Victoria Mitchell told WTKR. “I believe it, because with three students witnessing it, I felt there was some truth to it.”
Mitchell said the incident upset her most because school officials failed to notify parents about the teacher’s actions. Board, who had only started teaching at the school in August, was initially placed on paid administrative leave. He was arrested and charged with assault Oct. 3.
“Anytime a teacher is charged, or alleged to have done something like that, it is my wish to have some type of notification,” she said.
Virginia Beach City Public Schools officials confirmed that Board submitted a letter of resignation, and that district officials did not alert parents about his arrest.
