LEXINGTON, Ohio – Police and school officials are blaming parents for a massive brawl in the stands that was caught on video after a heated varsity basketball game last week.
The brawl between parents attending last Friday’s game between Lexington and Wooster high schools started around 9 p.m., just after Wooster handed Lexington its first loss of the season, the News Journal reports.

Lexington Police called for backup and secured players in their respective locker rooms when parents from both teams got into an altercation behind the scoring table. News Journal sports reporter Conner Casey said the brawl began between adults, and students from Wooster intervened.
A video of the incident posted online shows some adults shoving each other and throwing punches while others attempted to break up the melee. At least one man yelled for someone to “get the police over here” as combatants tumbled down the bleachers and witnesses screamed in horror.
“To me it’s embarrassing to have adults diminish what the kids have done,” Cardinal Conference Commissioner Ron Dessecker told Fox 8.

“The kids are ok – it’s the adults and this is not just our league or our conference, this is all over, whether it be in the state of Ohio, in this country. You see these situations and it’s appalling,” he said. “It’s just something that I really do not like to deal with to be honest with you.”

Casey estimated the fight lasted for several minutes. Police reported only minor injuries – none requiring medical treatment.
“I believe wholeheartedly, just in some of the experience that I have had, that I think parents, players can become overwhelmed with emotion and passion for the sport itself and at some point in time that carries over and changes from just a gamesmanship or sportsmanship issue into more of a criminal behavior that needs to be addressed,” Lexington village administrator Andy Smallstey told Fox 8.
Only one person was briefly detained after the fight and police are not gathering information and video to investigate, though their efforts were delayed because students did not have class on Monday.
“Hopefully down the road we don’t have any more of these situations that occur, hopefully we learn from this. We, as adults,” Dessecker said.
Wooster principal Tyler Keener posted a link on Twitter directing parents to a statement about sportsmanship that reminds them to “remain calm and composed before, during, and after games.”
“Profanity, degrading remarks, and intimidating actions directed at officials, competitors, and other fans will not be tolerated and are grounds for removal from the event site,” the statement read.
Others also posted comments and videos of the fight to Twitter, including WMFD sports reporter Brian Skowronski, who took video of the incident from the top of the bleachers that showed an elderly woman attempting to flee the madness.

“Smh! People just don’t know how to act,” Renae posted in response to Skowronski’s video. “I really feel bad for the elderly lady trying to get away from the chaos.”
“Stay classy Lexington,” Todd Ivy added.
