LA VERNIA, Texas – La Vernia Police arrested several high school students on campus Thursday based on allegations of sexual assault during hazing incidents involving male student athletes.

“Several weeks ago, the La Vernia Police Department received an outcry of hazing involving high school student athletes. We made contact with several students who gave forensic interviews with the Children’s Alliance of South Texas,” Chief Bruce Ritchey wrote in a prepared statement.

“The results of the interviews confirmed evidence a crime had been committed.”

Investigators consulted with the 81st Judicial District Attorney’s Office and arrested “several juvenile students” at La Vernia High School on Thursday, according to Fox San Antonio.

The statement states the students were charged with sexual assault, but did not detail the level of alleged assault, how many students were involved, what it entailed, or when it took place.

“The students were returned to the La Vernia Police Department where they were magistrate and processed by the Wilson County Juvenile Probation Office,” Ritchey wrote. “The investigation continues and we do anticipate more arrest (sic) in the future.”

La Vernia Independent School District Superintendent Jose Moreno issued a prepared statement that provides no details and offers vague excuses for why officials won’t discuss the situation, KSAT reports.

“A complaint was filed in reference to High School Boys’ Athletics. The District is aware of the complaint and is fully cooperating with the authorities as they conduct a thorough investigation,” Moreno wrote. “The District is under strict guidelines and is not able to comment on the complaint at this time. Rest assured that every precautionary measure has been taken to ensure that our students are supervised and safe.”

Ritchey “did not say how many students were arrested, but at least three were taken into custody while our cameras were there,” Fox San Antonio reports.

The alleged hazing in La Vernia follows a similar incident in Midland, Texas earlier this year that led to six arrests, including two coaches, CBS 7 reports.

Police allege the Midland hazing involved Goddard Jr. High School basketball players who were traveling on a bus January, when some students forced others to strip to their underwear and simulate sex while coaches Irving Gomez and Rogelio Gutierrez did nothing to stop it.

Court records allege students called out for help, and bus footage shows Gomez, who was driving the bus, repeatedly called the boys homosexual slurs and told them to “keep it in their pants.” Gutierrez allegedly ignored the melee and stared at his phone, according to the news site.

Some students alleged forced sex acts also occurred.

The coaches allegedly forced the students to delete videos of the assault from their phones and did not notify police. School officials fired the coaches, who were arrested and charged with felonies on Feb. 10, CBS 7 reports.
