MOORESVILLE, N.C. – Iredell County Sheriff’s officials responded to Lake Norman High School Thursday morning after a student attempted to hang himself and was found unresponsive dangling from a noose.

Sheriff Darren Campbell told the Mooresville Tribune the student was found by a classmate hanging from a “makeshift noose” in the auditorium area of the school just after 10 a.m. in what appears to be a “self-inflicted injury.”

School administrators pulled the student down and a nurse and school resource officer performed CPR until first responders arrived.

Authorities did not identify the student, but said he was male.

“Obviously, we will have an increased presence her from a law enforcement standpoint,” Campbell told said, adding that incident “appears to be an isolated one.”

He told WCMC the boy was taken to Carolinas Medical Center-Main in Charlotte for treatment. The student is reportedly in critical condition.

As detectives interviewed students, staff and family, classes proceeded as normal at Lake Norman High.

School officials, meanwhile, sent an ambiguous email alert to parents.

“This morning an incident involving an individual student occurred on our campus. This incident is being investigated by the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office,” the message read. “There is absolutely no threat on campus. Our students are safe and school will continue on a regular schedule.”

Many folks who commented about the situation online were horrified, with several chastising the media for reporting on the apparent suicide. Media outlets do not typically publicize suicides, but often make an exception when they occur in public places.

“Call it what it is, attempted suicide. This is the reality that our children are growing up in,” Frank Smith posted to Facebook.

“I hope to God that all the kids in LNHS have support groups offered to them. This is a horrible incident and the fact that that kid did it in the auditorium speaks volumes,” Linda Le Cras added.

“Terrible that this is reported by media. All that needed to be said was the same thing that was shared with LNHS parents. If it was your family or friend, you would feel differently about this being reported,” Becky Garrison wrote. “How about a little privacy for the family.”

“This is important to report. It needs to remind us not to keep this a hush hush subject,” Yvonne Ziats countered. “If you are that appalled by it I hope you are not appalled enough to make sure your kiddos mental health is OK.”

“This is a very important issue to discuss; too many young people are taking their lives due to pressures they don’t know how to handle,” Koralen Danielson-Daniels posted. “We have to step up and look for signs of depression, and get help for them.”
