WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Donald Trump is staying true to his campaign pledge to forego his salary and donated his quarterly paycheck on Wednesday to the U.S. Department of Education.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders made the announcement at a press briefing, where she handed a check to Education Secretary Betsy DeVos for $100,000.

“It’s that time again, as many of you have probably noticed and several of you have asked about, for us to announce where the president will be donating his quarterly salary,” Sanders told reporters. “Last quarter, the president’s salary went toward the restoration of two projects at a national battlefield. After his donation, additional donors quickly stepped up to bring the total gift to over $260,000.

“And this quarter the president will be donating his salary to the Department of Education,” she continued.

Sanders then introduced DeVos to explain how the money will be spent to “equip the boys and girls of tomorrow.”

“I want to start by saying how grateful I am to the president for this generous gift. The president is committed to our nation’s students and to reforming education in America so that every child, no matter their zip code, has access to a high quality education,” DeVos said.

“He and I have had many conversations about how best to put student’s needs first to ensure we are setting them up for a lifetime of success,” she said. “There is much work to be done, but we are certainly on the right track thanks to the president’s leadership.

“Just yesterday, Ivanka Trump and I hosted a summer reading event at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, where the focus was on getting young girls, ages 6 to 10, excited about learning science, technology, engineering and math,” DeVos continued.

“It was fun to see their eyes light up as they got to explore, create and experiment in a collaborative environment. Today’s and tomorrow’s economy requires students prepared for STEM careers, that’s why we decided to use the president’s second quarter salary to host a STEM focused camp for students at the Department of Education,” she said.

“We want to encourage as many children as possible to explore STEM fields in the hope that many develop a passion for these fields. We look forward to this exciting endeavor, and I thank President Trump again for this generous gift.”

Wednesday’s announcement comes after Trump donated his first-quarter paycheck, which totaled $78,333 before taxes, to the National Park service in April.

“I am thrilled at the President’s decision to donate the check he did today,” Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke said at the time, according to Politifact. He said the agency will use it to support “the infrastructure on our nation’s battlefields. We’re about $100 (million) or $229 million behind in deferred maintenance on our battlefields alone, and that’s on our 25 national battlefields. And we’re excited about that opportunity.”

The site notes the donations are “consistent with the pledge the billionaire businessman made during the campaign – that “if I’m elected president, I’m accepting no salary,” but refused to rate his comments as “Promise Kept” because it’s apparently not yet “clear that this is going to become a permanent policy while he’s in office.”

“Until the policy becomes a permanent fixture of Trump’s presidency,” the site wrote after Wednesday’s donation, “we’re rating Trump’s promise In the Works.”
