New Hartford Board of Education Chairman Josh Adams is setting an example for students, though it’s likely not one most parents would appreciate.

Adams resigned from his position last Wednesday after the Connecticut school board held a vote on starting each meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance, just as students across the United States do every day. Republican board member Tom Buzzi told The Republican-American the measure was introduced as a way to get the board “on the same page” for at least a minute each meeting, and Adams was the only one out of eight board members to vote against the move at last Tuesday’s meeting.

According to Fox News Insider:

Adams was overruled after telling board members that he would not propose the policy in a meeting, saying he decides on the agenda as chairman. He also said he doesn’t pledge allegiance to anything and supports “principles on which the country was founded.”

Adams also reportedly said that he hadn’t planned on resigning, but that he felt it was the right thing to do.

The Greenwich Patch points out Adams is only the latest public official in Connecticut to grandstand in opposition to the Pledge of Allegiance. Haddam Board of Selectmen Melissa Schlag also earned jeers and boos for repeatedly kneeling during the Pledge of Allegiance to express her disgust with President Trump, and the Democrat said she plans to keep up her protest despite public outrage “as long as Donald J. Trump is the president of the United States.”

“I don’t have to stop my free speech when I walk into a selectmen’s meeting,” she lectured at a recent meeting. “I don’t hate my country. I love my country. We need to continue this conversation.”

“I knelt out of extreme sorrow for our country, because earlier that day, the president of the United States, Donald J. Trump, sat down with a murderous dictator, Vladimir Putin,” Schlag posted to Facebook in July. “I knelt out of extreme sorrow for our country, that the leader of our great nation rejected the advice and findings of all American intelligence agencies and would rather support the lies of a murderous dictator.”

Many folks who attended the selectmen’s meeting in July turned their backs on Schlag, while others protested for and against her stunt. The vast majority condemned her actions, including several military veterans who weren’t afraid to give her a piece of their mind.

“You should do it on your own time – not when you are representing all of Haddam,” local resident and Beirut combat veteran Bablo Arroyo said, adding that he witnessed soldiers die for Schlag’s freedoms.

“You are urinating on their graves,” he said.

The Greenwich Patch reports:

… Supporters of Schlag pointed out Republican Regional School District 17 Board of Education members Maura Wallin, of Haddam, and Democrat Eric Couture, of Killingworth, have been kneeling at meetings since August, but haven’t received the same sort of criticism.

Wallin said she began doing so to support her Latina daughter after the NFL football season began last year.
Couture, a former political researcher, said he and Wallin didn’t consult one another, but happened to make their decision at the same time.
