A California elementary school teacher “inadvertently” omitted the words “one nation, under God” during the morning Pledge of Allegiance on Monday, but parents quickly corrected the situation.

A “veteran teacher” skipped over the key words while reciting the pledge at Wilson Elementary School on Monday, but the omission wasn’t lost on a parent volunteer who posted about it on social media.

The post ignited a firestorm, and questions from KMPH forced Dinuba Unified School District Superintendent Joe Hernandez to respond. Hernandez issued a statement about the ordeal, but did not identify the teacher, who he said will not face disciplinary action.

“Today at Wilson Elementary School, one of our teachers inadvertently left out an important portion of the Pledge of Allegiance. A parent volunteer posted their concern about the omission on social media. The teacher has since spoken to the parent and apologized for the omission and the posting has been removed by the parent,” Hernandez wrote.

“Dinuba Unified takes great pride in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and modeling our civic duties and responsibilities,” he wrote. “We sincerely apologize to anyone who may have been offended by the omission.”

KMPH notes the original 1892 version of the Pledge of Allegiance did not contain “one nation, under God,” which was added in 1954 by Dwight D. Eisenhower during the Cold War.
