GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – A Grand Rapids school cafeteria worker was canned this week after she hired two fourth-graders to pummel a classmate.

Hit BullyThe woman, who wasn’t identified by the local television station WoodTV, admitted to giving two fourth-grade students a total of $1 to ruff up a classmate who offended her. The woman, who has no criminal history, worked for West Michigan Janitorial Service, a contractor for the school district.

She was immediately fired, WoodTV reports.

“To think that there’s an adult that can be so … twisted to sit there and watch a little boy – a little 9-year-old boy – get beat up, and get enjoyment out of it,” the victim’s mother told WoodTV.

“I didn’t believe it. Who would believe something like that?” she questioned.

Officials with the Grand Rapids Police and Grand Rapids Public Schools are still investigating the incident, and district officials wouldn’t comment on the details or the extent of the boy’s injuries.

“We’re still investigating that,” district spokesman John Helmholdt told WoodTV. “That’s not something I’ve received a report on.”

Helmholdt said the district properly vetted the cafeteria worker and she had a clean criminal history.

“All GRPS employees and individuals who are working with children have to go through the district’s background check,” he told the television station. “But in this case, because it’s an external vendor, it’s actually a double-check” because West Michigan Janitorial Service does their own background checks, as well.

The victim’s mother is considering a lawsuit, and said she’s concerned about retaliation from the fired employee, according to WoodTV.

“I don’t know what kind of woman I’m dealing with,” she said. “It’s a little sick and twisted to me, to get enjoyment out of making a group of kids beat up a little kid you don’t like.”
