BRADENTON, Fla. – A Florida school district is at the center of another student-staff sex scandal after a recent investigation revealed a 44-year-old cafeteria manager fathered a student’s child.

Florida baby daddyThe investigation revealed former Bayshore High School cafeteria manager Leverna Williams sired a child with former student Shakura Ogletree, whom a district investigator claims was 16 at the time.

What’s worse is that some school officials had apparently been tipped off about the relationship and failed to act in a timely manner.  According to the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, “two of five employees set to be fired for their mishandling of a similar misconduct investigation at Manatee High were made aware of concerns voiced by Ogletree’s mother, Lakeshia, in a July 10, 2012 phone call, but the scope of their response was narrow and almost nonexistent.”

Williams resigned Sept. 19, 2013 and wed Shakura Ogletree, now 20 years old, two days later.

Lakeshia Ogletree first contacted district officials last July with concerns Williams was the father of her daughter’s child, and school leaders tasked district investigator Debra Horne to conduct a four-question interview with Shakura, who denied the allegations over the phone and hung up, the Herald-Tribune reports.

“Williams and Lakeshia Ogletree (the mother) were never interviewed by Horne. An official investigation never took place and a case file was never opened,” the news site reports. “A more thorough investigation in July 2012 would have revealed that Williams and Shakura Ogletree were having sex in motels when he was 40 and she was 16, as determined recently by new district investigator Troy Pumphrey.”

School records show several school officials were aware of the allegations, but Lakeshia Ogletree said she received a call from a school board attorney who told her that her daughter was 18 when the acts occurred and there was nothing the district could do about it.

“The lack of a proper investigation meant Williams spent the past year in his job at Bayshore High,” according to the Herald-Tribune.

After a more thorough investigation by the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, authorities are seeking a felony charge against Williams for unlawful sexual activity with a minor.

The case comes on the heels of another misconduct investigation at Manatee High in which four school administrators, including Horne, are charged with felonies for failing to report child abuse. Those officials allegedly neglected to inform police or state authorities about allegations Manatee high football coach Rod Frazier was inappropriately touching students and staff, the news site reports.

“Horne, as well as Assistant Superintendent Bob Gagnon and former Manatee High assistant principals Gregg Faller and Matthew Kane, has been charged with failure to report. Gagnon, Faller and Kane are also charged with lying to police,” according to the Herald-Tribune.

While Shakura Ogletree and Williams have both given Pumphrey sketchy details about when the sexual activity between them took place, some things are considered fairly certain.

Williams stalked Ogletree after meeting her in the school cafeteria and the two eventually developed a relationship that extended beyond the school day. In October 2011 Ogletree turned 18 and by February she was pregnant with Williams’ child, which was born in November 2012.

In the end, Ogletree and Williams acknowledged their sexual relationship and Williams resigned last month. Two days later he married Shakura Ogletree, with her mother as the witness to the ceremony, the Herald-Tribune reports.
