LOS ANGELES – Across the nation, more and more adults who were molested by teachers during their school years are stepping forward and reporting their experiences to police.

We can assume that this was the case for two former students from the Los Angeles school district who may have recently had the courage to do just that, resulting in the arrest of Peter Christopher Gomez, a high school drama teacher.

Gomez, 47, was charged Tuesday with sexually molesting two male students 15 years ago, reports CBS Los Angeles.

The former teacher is facing 26 felony counts, including multiple counts of sexual molestation, sodomy of a person under 16 and oral copulation of a person under 16, according to the L.A. District Attorney’s office.

The alleged victims were between the ages of 14 to 18 at the time of the incidents and attended Benjamin Franklin High School.

Gomez, who has been with the LAUSD since 1996, was a drama and history teacher at the school during the time of the alleged assault.

Prosecutors say the alleged molestation occurred between June of 1999 and September of 2003, reports CBS Los Angeles.

Bail is expected to be set around $1.5 million and if convicted, Gomez could face up to 20 years in prison.

DaNita Wilson, a 33-year-old former teacher at Charlton County High School, accepted a plea bargain and will serve 10 years in prison followed by 15 years’ probation, reports the Florida Times-Union.

Wilson was charged with six counts of sexual assault.

As part of her sentence, she is to have no contact with minors except her two young children and eventually her grandchildren if she should have any. She is also required to register as a sex offender.

The age of sexual consent in Georgia is 16, but it is considered a felony under state law for a teacher to have sex with any student, according to the Florida Times-Union.

If Wilson had not accepted the plea bargain, she would have faced a far harsher sentence because one of the victims was under 16. In Georgia, if an individual commits sexual assault on a person under 16, they could be sentenced to 25 to 50 years.

Prosecutors decided to dismiss the charges involving the student under the age of 16 as part of the plea bargain.

Wilson was arrested and immediately removed from her teaching position in January 2013.
