COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. – Officials at Collier County schools decided not to renew the contract of a Palmetto Ridge High School teacher after she was allegedly busted sleeping in class and swearing at students.

Marjorie Hale-Gornell

Marjorie Hale-Gornell had been on desk duty since she was allegedly caught by a school official last February sitting at her desk with a blanket over her head. The incident came one day before students reported she used profanity in class and complained that she often showed up late, ABC reports.

A district investigation “concluded that Hale-Gornell was sitting at her desk with her head down and not supervising students,” according to the news site. “She is also accused of saying, ‘someone f****d up yesterday’ and using the term ‘cotton pickin,’ which school officials say was offensive to some students.”

Hale-Gornell also allegedly asked other teachers to open her classroom when she was late for 1st period, which allowed students into class but left them unsupervised until she arrived, ABC reports.

The district investigation prompted school officials to opt against renewing the math teacher’s contract for the 2014-15 school year.

Hale-Gornell told administrators she didn’t mean to offend anyone with the term “cotton pickin,” and had not been late since the beginning of the school year, though students contend she was late more often.

At least one of Hale-Gornell’s former students told the news site she was a good teacher who was a big help with a difficult subject.

“She actually paid attention to us. She was pretty good that year,” Gino Rodriguez, who had the teacher for geometry in 2013, told ABC. “She helped me out a lot in understanding math.”

Hale-Gornell’s case is currently under review by the Collier County teachers union, which means she may attempt to appeal the termination. If she does, there’s a good change that an arbitrator could reinstate the teacher with a less severe reprimand, although Hale-Gornell has declined to comment on her intentions.

According to ABC, the teacher is also under investigation by the Florida Department of Education, which has the authority to revoke her teaching certification.

Hale-Gornell isn’t the first teacher to get caught sleeping in class. She’s not even the first Florida teacher busted for snoozing.

Last year, Cypress Bay High School science teacher Patrick Geller earned himself a two-day unpaid suspension after he fell asleep and students recorded him and forwarded the footage to school officials, the Sun-Sentinel reports.
