RICHARDSON, Texas – A 43-year-old music teacher is on paid leave from RISD Academy after allegedly exposing a 15-year-old male to the HIV virus, according to a report at a local CBS affiliate in Dallas. Roger “Joe” Kessler and the teen met through the gay-dating app Grindr.

Kessler admitted to having sex with the boy “at least four times,” and at least once unprotected. The music teacher did not inform the teen of his HIV positive status. Kessler was caught as he attempted to sneak out of the teen’s home, after the teenager’s mother “saw a man leaving her backyard.” She believed the house was being robbed and called police. The 31-year-old woman “was holding Kessler down when officers arrived,” according to the Dallas Morning News.

KHOU reports that a statement by the Richardson School District released a statement saying in part:

“…Police have indicated that the charge does not involve a student at RISD Academy or in RISD. Mr. Kessler has been placed on administrative leave, pending the resolution of the situation. Kessler has been a music teacher in RISD for 14 years, all at RISD Academy, with no history of complaints of this nature. RISD Academy parents were informed through a letter home Thursday.”

According to the KHOU report, the last message on Kessler’s phone read, “…is your mom home right now?”

Other cases of HIV-positive adults in positions of authority exploiting young teens have been reported in the not-so-distant past:

* As reported in June at EAGnews.org, a similar case in Louisiana was particularly despicable as a teacher “intentionally” exposed a 16-year-old male student at H.L. Bourgeois High to the HIV virus. Former teacher Derrick Nesby, 37, pleaded “not guilty” in July, and a trial date has not yet been reported. He was charged with “felony carnal knowledge of a juvenile, intentional exposure to the AIDS virus and molestation of a juvenile by an educator.”

* Last year, Mario Hunt, a former teacher’s aide Cahokia high school in Illinois was charged with transmitting the HIV virus to a student when he was 17, in a case that made the Associated Press. A few months after the AP report, KSDK reported that a second victim filed a lawsuit against Hunt’s school district, claiming that “he told district officials about the abuse and they told him not to say anything.” At the time, Superintendent Art Ryan denied the allegations. Jarrod Beasley, the attorney for the victim, told EAGnews.org that the trial is set for next year.

* Last year, a 28-year-old former third grade teacher was “indicted for child molestation” after it was found that he “targeted 15-year old boys” in upstate New York. Phillip Burns was a “teacher of the year” candidate. And he is HIV positive.

* In 2012, Travis McCauley, a former assistant band director was given a 30-year sentence for having sex with a 15-year old in Georgia. In that case, the boy with whom McCauley was having sex “contacted police after learning McCauley was HIV positive,” as reported at the Daily Mail.

* In 2012, HIV-positive high school teacher Brandon Tomblin, 27, was sentenced for “up to 20 years in prison” after he had sex with three students (ages 16, 17, 18).

Kessler has been “charged with sexual assault of a child and is currently booked on a $250,000 bond.”
