HOUSTON – The influx of immigrants continues to weigh on schools across America.

KPRC reports Houston Independent School District’s Las Americas Newcomers School was full with 325 students at the beginning of this school year.

It “caters to children from more than 30 countries around the world who speak little to no English and have been in the U.S. less than two years,” according to the news site.

Principal Marie Moreno says her school typically begins the school year with 170 students, but the recent surge of Central American children caught crossing the border caused that number to swell to its maximum capacity.

“They all need an education, they all need to learn English, they all need to learn how to survive here,” Moreno tells Click2Houston.com. “Here we expect our kids to be college and career-ready, we want our kids to be well-prepared for high school and graduate from high school.”

The school is seeking to prepare the students for middle and high school.

“Moreno said federal law prohibits immigrant from being kept separate from mainstream classes for longer than two school years,” the news site reports.

The school’s mascot is the RHINO – which is an acronym for Really Hungry Individuals In Need of Opportunity.

Many students attending the school are awaiting court hearings.

“According to data collected by Syracuse University through its Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse program, the average wait time for an immigration hearing in Texas is 433 days,” according to KPRC.

“I can’t miss a court date because I could be deported,” says student Eduardo Fernandez.

The children at Las Americas get more than a free education. Students have access to counseling and health care, too.

The Houston school district isn’t the only one feeling the influx of immigrant students.

In August, EAGnews reported about the “swarm” of immigrant children seeking to enroll in Georgia’s DeKalb County’s schools.

A poll last month found 32 percent of Americans favor illegal immigrants attending taxpayer-funded public schools.
