The Hattiesburg American reports:

[Devin] Nottis was arrested Wednesday night in the wake of what officials have characterized as a college fraternity prank gone wrong and charged with grand larceny, two counts of animal cruelty and trespassing.

“USM put Nottis on interim suspension, and put the fraternity he was pledging, Pi Kappa Alpha, on indefinite suspension. The chapter also was placed on administrative suspension by the national organization,” according to the paper.

Police say that during a fraternity scavenger hunt, Nottis took a flamingo instead of taking a picture of the bird, ABC 11 reports.

“Zoo officials say a female bird was taken at 1:08 a.m. Tuesday and found later that morning, several miles away. It was returned to the zoo and had to be euthanized because of its injuries,” according to the news station.

A male flamingo was also injured and authorities believe he sustained injuries “while defending its mate.”

Nottis’ bond was set at $17,300.
