BROCKTON, Mass. – A two-time “Teacher of the Year” winner is on paid leave after being accused of raping at least one student.

Joaquim Andrade received Brockton High School’s top distinction twice in the past seven years and was the Cape Verdean Association’s Man of the Year in 2011, his lawyer tells The Enterprise.

But now, the bilingual science teacher has been arrested and charged with the forcible rape of one of his 14-year-old students, a girl in his ESL class.

The paper reports:

He was accused by Plymouth County Assistant District Attorney Amanda Fowle of drawing in the alleged victim with a fake Facebook profile and online chats about soccer before going to her house on Oct. 7, persuading her to get in his car and then sexually abusing her at several locations.

The teacher has been charged with rape with force, aggravated rape, two counts of indecent assault and battery of a child over 14 and enticement of a child under 16, according to the paper.

Prosecutors fear she may not be the only victim.

Fowle said in court another student alleges Andrade “touched her leg while in his car and that he offered her money for sex, which she refused,” according to the paper.

The teacher’s attorney, Adamo Lanza, said his client “would be vindicated.”

“He is going to vehemently oppose these charges,” Lanza said in court.

“This is very common because predatory offenders apply only for certain jobs that give them access to vulnerable kids,” former prosecutor Wendy Murphy tells the Enterprise.

“They also ingratiate themselves into the community with charisma and by volunteering, and naive people think such people are wonderful.”

The alleged victim has been in America two years and Andrade was tasked with helping the student – and other “newcomers” – learn English.

The teacher is on paid leave, pending the outcome of the court proceedings.
