NEENAH, Wis. – Hundreds of mail pieces from Republican candidates for Tuesday’s election were found in a recycling bin in a Neenah neighborhood Thursday, according to Republican State Assembly candidate in the 55th District, Mike Rohrkaste. Rohrkaste told me in a phone interview Sunday that he received an email from a resident in the neighborhood who discovered the mailers.

Most of the get out the vote mailers are from Rohrkaste’s campaign. Some are also from 6th Congressional District Republican candidate Glenn Grothman; others are from a third party group on behalf of 19th District State Senate Candidate Roger Roth.

Rohrkaste says he’s been assured by Neenah postal officials that the mailers were sent out on Friday and he stressed that he was very pleased with the overall response of the Neenah Post Office. But, questions remain. “Maybe it was because the postal carrier doesn’t like Republicans, maybe he (or she) just got tired of delivering campaign mailers” Rohrkaste told me. Especially troubling to Rohrkaste is that this is his third mailing in the area and he has no way of knowing if the carrier had dumped the pieces from the previous two mailings.

Rohrkaste also said he feels it’s important for word of the story to get out because it’s a very serious matter if a postal carrier doesn’t deliver the mail, regardless of the motives or the target. “A postal carrier can’t just throw away mail from such and such restaurant or business just because they don’t like them” Rohrkaste told me.

Rohrkaste said a postal official immediately came to the scene and took photographs of the mailers. He said two agents from the Office of the Inspector General in Chicago are in the area interviewing the citizen who found the mailers.

Rohrkaste said postal officials wouldn’t disclose to him what might happen to a postal carrier who discards mail, regardless of its nature. We’ll be making calls to the Postal Service and to the Office of the Inspector General on Monday and will follow up with additional reporting when more information is available.

Rohrkaste is right; at this point we cannot definitely say we know the motive of the postal carrier who was to deliver these pieces. As noted above though, all the dumped mailers were from Republicans. That would be quite a coincidence if this act isn’t politically motivated. Again, when we know more, we’ll pass it along.
