WYOMING, Del. – A Delaware middle school teacher who raped a 13-year-old student has learned her fate: probation.

Former Fifer Middle School teacher Stephanie Seabury received the unbelievably light sentence last week from the Kent County Court last Wednesday. Her punishment requires her to report to a probation officer for a year and a half, and to register as a sex offender, but did not come with any jail time, WDEL.com reports.

“Seabury was 22 when she surrendered to Dover Police in April on sexual abuse charges. During this time, authorities said she would meet with the teen and drive him to her unit at Woodmill Apartments in Dover,” the news site reports.

“The pair was captured on surveillance video leaving Fifer and getting into Seabury’s car on Feb. 26. An investigation in mid-March led to the revelation of explicit texts and photos from throughout the relationship.”

Seabury was initially suspended from her teaching position upon her arrest, but has since been fired.

Sea bury was arrested on one count of sexual abuse of a child by a person in a position of trust or authority, but pleaded guilty to one count of fourth-degree rape, the Delaware Attorney General’s Office told DelawareOnline.com.

School authorities launched their investigation into Seabury’s conduct after a student approached them March 12 about the relationship, court records show.

The boy told reported he had sex with his teacher at her home Feb. 25, according to Delaware Online.

“Seabury could not be reached for comment Friday,” the news site reports. “But a man who answered at her family’s home in Hauppauge, N.Y., said to call her lawyer.

“When asked who the lawyer was he said, ‘You should be able to find out at the courthouse,’ and added, ‘She’s innocent.’”

Many who read the story online couldn’t believe the teacher did not receive jail time for her horrible behavior.

“Sooooooo a female teacher having sex with a student only gets a spanking (no pun intended,)” Tom Cassidy posted to Facebook. “We need to have a rally to stop this discrimination.”

Linda Worthy seemed to agree.

“Contributing to a minor … she needs to go to jail,” she wrote.
