FRESNO, Calif. – Two male employees at Fresno’s Clovis High School face criminal charges after they were both allegedly sexually involved with a student at the school.

Assistant Clovis High School football coach Dwayne Andrews and photography teacher Matthew Pena were arrested last week for allegedly engaging in sexual acts with a female student who was 17 years old when the incidents occurred, ABC 30 reports.

“Our school became aware of the possibility of a rumor that there might be an inappropriate relationship between a student and a staff member on late Wednesday,” district spokeswoman Kelly Avants said.

Police charged both men with the same crimes – unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, oral copulation and lewd acts – though the alleged acts occurred at different locations and different times, according to the Fresno Bee.

The female victim turned 18 in December, but the alleged crimes occurred before then.

“Whenever you learn about something like this, it’s heartbreaking,” Avants told ABC. “It’s devastating to everyone involved.”

Avants told the Bee district officials heard of the allegedly sexual relationships from another student who was not the victim, and conducted an investigation that led them to the two men.

“They followed through,” Clovis Police Department spokeswoman Janet Stoll-Lee told ABC. “They got search warrants for each one of them. They went and arrested each one of the men.”

Pena, 32, and Andrews, 30, were both accomplished athletes years ago.

“Pena played collegiate baseball as a pitcher at University of the Pacific. As a student at Buchanan High, he was a Bee All-Star baseball player in 2000,” according to the Bee.

“Andrews played linebacker for Fresno State for four seasons (2003-2006), and was named to the Western Athletic Conference’s first-team defense in 2006.”

Many parents and local residents were clearly upset about the news.

“Apparently, no one has a clue about judging applicants for teaching positions anymore, but I notice the salary for administrative personnel has gone through the roof,” gottasay2u posted to ABC.

“Being in a position of authority these men should be held to a higher standard than the average citizen,” Art Mosqueda posted. “It is disgusting and it blemishes all of the good work that goes on in public high schools when people like this take advantage of their position of authority and victimize children.”

Others questioned why there seems to be an increasing number of cases in which teachers are sexually active with students.

“Everywhere you look there are situations or crimes like this happening more often,” Ramsis noted. “What is going on with our school systems?”
