TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. – A northern Michigan school district faces a federal lawsuit after school officials allegedly retaliated against a student who was sexually abused by his teacher.

The former West Senior High School student was 15 years old during the 2011-12 school year when former teacher Lisa Gaye Placek sent him inappropriate text messages and performed oral sex on the student in her car, the Traverse City Record-Eagle reports.

Placek pleaded guilty to assault with intent to commit sexual penetration and was sentenced to between 23 months and 10 years in prison, but was paroled in January 2014, Mlive.com reports.

On Monday, Traverse City attorney Grant Parsons filed a federal lawsuit in Grand Rapids’ U.S. District court that contends school officials harassed the student when he initially came forward with the allegations to the point he dropped out of school.

“The harassment was so severe, pervasive, and objectively offensive that it could be said to deprive (the student) of access to the educational opportunities or benefits provided by” Traverse City Area Public Schools, according to the complaint cited by the Record-Eagle.

The complaint states “students harassed him; parents gossiped about him; coaches excluded him; teachers refused to share their classes with him; administration changed his classes and supervision, expelled him for a period of time; officials falsely accused him of misconduct and made unsubstantiated reports against him to police to undermine his credibility during the sexual assault investigation,” Mlive.com reports.

The alleged false accusations to police include charges that the teen chewed tobacco and introduced other students to porn. School officials also allegedly told investigators the student was “untrustworthy” and had “sexual issues,” and provided police with a list of his alleged wrongdoings. They also ignored the victim’s complaints of online bullying by other students, according to the lawsuit.

The Record-Eagle reports district officials also prevented him from collecting depositions for a civil lawsuit, including a letter from January 2012 that described the teacher’s sex acts with a different student, according to Parsons.

“So at that point the school know that (the student) was probably telling the truth, but instead of rallying around (the student), the school started retaliating,” Parsons told the news site.

TCAPS officials had not been served with the lawsuit when they declined to comment to the Record-Eagle.

The suit claims the district violated federal Title IX laws against gender discrimination, as well as the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th amendment and Michigan’s Elliot-Larsen Civil Rights Act, according to MLive.com.

The student is seeking more than $75,000 as compensation for suffering that included hives, sleep loss, depression, anxiety, anger and other issues.

“As a direct and proximate result of the sexual harassment and retaliation by Defendant, Plaintiff suffered severe embarrassment, humiliation, retaliation and harassment and anguish, loss of reputation and social standing, he lost his athletic participation and with it, his opportunity for a college scholarship,” according to the lawsuit, cited by MLive.com.
