LINCOLN, Neb. – Our recent article regarding the debate in Nebraska over a proposal to require  the Pledge of Allegiance in public school classrooms drew a great deal of interest from our readers.

The proposal would have teachers in every K-12 classroom lead the Pledge at the beginning of the school day. Those who chose not to participate would be able to stand silently or remain seating without recrimination.

We argued that the Pledge should have a permanent place in American public school classrooms. We believe that patriotism should rise above politics and national loyalty should transcend partisan disagreements.

The Nebraska State Board of Education was slated to vote on the proposal July 11. But the vote was postponed because the board member who introduced the proposal was not able to attend the meeting.

The board is now expected to vote on the Pledge proposal at its Aug. 9-10 meeting, according to officials at the state capitol. That’s good news for everyone who would like a chance to share their views on the subject with board members.

Opinions about the Pledge of Allegiance in classrooms can be mailed to the Nebraska State Board of Education, 301 Centennial Mall South, Sixth Floor, P.O. Box 94987, Lincoln, Nebraska, 68509-4987.
