COLUMBIA, Mo. – A University of Missouri student facing criminal charges for alleged threats of terror told police he made the online posts because he was worried about failing his exam.

BenzFreshman Nathan Benz was arrested last month after a student called campus police Dec. 14 about a threat to blow up Cornell Hall that was posted to the anonymous messaging app Yik Yak, ABC 17 reports.

Court documents cited by the Columbia Missourian contend Benz wrote that he was going to “bomb the test” at Cornell Hall that evening, though the rest of the message is unclear.

Police brought in bomb-sniffing dogs and increased their presence at Cornell Hall during the test.

Benz allegedly admitted to writing the threatening post, as well as others about MU threats and the Oregon community college shooting, but told police he intended the “bomb the test” statement as a joke, according to the news site.

Benz was charged with a single misdemeanor count of making terroristic threats Dec. 23, and quickly posted the $4,500 bond, according to ABC 17.

Riverfront Times points out that Benz’ criminal charge comes despite the fact that his threat was never deemed “credible.”

“However, that does not negate the significance of finding and effectively bringing to justice those who make such threats,” Mizzou Chancellor Hank Foley told said in a December statement stressing student safety.

“We will do everything in our power to identify and prosecute individuals who threaten that safety.”

Online threats are a touchy subject at MU after another student, 19-year-old Hunter Park, used Yik Yak in November to threaten black students.

“I’m going to stand my ground tomorrow and shoot every black person I see,” the sophomore allegedly wrote.

“Safety is our No. 1 priority, and we will not tolerate threats to the peace of our campus,” MU police chief Doug Schwandt said in a statement after the Benz threat surfaced. “This is the second threat that we have investigated on Kik Yak in the past two months that has resulted in an arrest.”

And another student, at Northwestern State University, was also arrested on the same day as Park for a similar stunt, the Riverfront Times reports.

Connor Stottlemyre allegedly posted “I’m going to shoot any black people tomorrow, so be ready.”

Yik Yak co-founder Brooks Buffington is condemning the use of the app by criminals, and has made it clear the company fully cooperates with law enforcement.

“Let’s not waste any words here,” Buffington wrote after Park’s arrest, according to the Times. “This sort of misbehavior is NOT what Yik Yak is to be used for. Period.”
