WAUKESHA, Wis. – The trend in recent years has been for public schools to back down when challenged over displays or activities that outside groups or individuals find offensive or potentially unconstitutional.
At one high school, a memorial to a deceased teacher was altered because it contained a Christian symbol. At another, donations to a holiday charity fund are no longer encouraged, because the charity has religious affiliations.

And the list goes on and on.
But administrators at Waukesha West High School believe that the First Amendment grants free speech rights to all citizens – including students – and they are standing by that principle.
A parent told Fox 6 that she doesn’t believe a display on a wall at Waukesha West is appropriate, because it makes a pro-life statement regarding abortion.
The poster states a simple fact – “Abortion stops 3,000 beating hearts every day” – and is surrounded by hundreds of tiny paper heart cutouts.
The poster was produced by a Waukesha West student organization called “Students for Life.”

One student at the school took a photo of the display and took his home to show his mother, Jill Vendette, who was unhappy with the display.
“I was surprised – and then I was unhappy,” Vendette told the news service. “Every group has a right to voice their opinion. I just don’t feel this topic should be spoken about in a school. It’s just not the right venue.”
The mother said her stance in not political in nature.
“I also would be very angry if a poster went up supporting abortion,” Vendette was quoted as saying. “I would have the exact same feeling.”
But school administrators did their homework before allowing the display.
They told Fox6Now that they checked with the school district attorney, who said the display was the product of a formally recognized student organization, and was therefore allowable.
“While we recognize there may be people who disagree with that particular philosophical approach to things, it meets all the standards for First Amendment rights here in our school. We will support that and stand behind that,” Principal David LaBorde told Fox6Now.com.
LaBorde added that if there was a pro-choice student group at the school, it would have equal rights to display its point of view.
The poster was taken down temporarily, over a technicality.
School bylaws say official student groups must have a faculty advisor at all times, and LaBorde acknowledged that “Students for Life” had been without an advisor for several months.
But a new advisor has been appointed, and the post will be put back in its original spot on the wall, the news service reported.
